August is Cheb i Sabbah’s birth month. We’re continuing the celebration this week with SURESH behind the decks. Gina and Eloise will make an altar to bring Chebiji’s presence to the room.
We have our 2nd Tuesday residents FATCHANCEBELLYDANCE and WENDY MARLATT. plus an All improv 2nd set featuring PAIGE LAWRENCE, MAY YANG, SADIRA and SURREYYA.
A little background on Chebiji’s influence on Underground Nomads:
The intention of Underground Nomads was 3-fold: To resurrect the “Outernational” vibe that Cheb i Sabbah had created with his legendary Tuesdays at Nickies BBQ in the Lower Haight (his weekly that ran 17+ years); To bring him back out playing for his fans for as long as he would be able to (following the Nickies Flashback event, we realized that his “happy place” was playing for his fans – which he continued to do until his last days here); and to preserve the integrity of truly eclectic world music and dance performance art – a torch that the next generation of DJs, dancers and musicians who were inspired by his music would carry in his honor. Following his passing, the Underground Nomads crew has kept the vibe he inspired going strong. Every year, we celebrate his life on the month of his birth. His birth date was August 7th. Suresh will be bringing the eclectic vibe to the dancefloor to honor our co-founder and inspiration. Eloise and Gina will be making an altar as a dedication to his life and music.

8PM: Music starts
Performance sets at 9 and 10.
DJ sets all night following performances, till midnight or later. We have transitioned to earlier hours, and are now offering 2 sets of performances most weeks (occasionally, we will do just 1 set).
$5 entry most weeks* – Free before 9 if you ask.
(*On certain weeks with larger Special Guest lineups or Special Event nights, we have sliding scale entry fee – usually $5-10 – and may not offer free early entry – but we will honor it if you ask).
