Feb. 4: Marco (Bissap Baobab), Shondell, Bay Area I.T.S. with Calamity Sam & Zoe Jakes.

An Extra Special Tribute / Extra Important Underground Nomads night
… See why below.

Marco
DJ Marco aka Marco Senghor, Bissap Baobab restaurant and club owner,
DJ and promoter of African and World Music events.

Chef/owner of the very much loved Bissap Baobab restaurants and clubs, Marco Senghor, has been a long time supporter and friend of Chebi Sabbah. The last reincarnation of Cheb i Sabbah’s Legendary Nickies Tuesdays took place at Bissap Baobab Village (Bollyhood cafe at the time), and Underground Nomads had our first nights there. DJ Amar and Marco put on numerous fundraisers at Bissap Baobab for Chebi Sabbah, and hosted regular events with FatChanceBellyDance and Helm. It was Marco’s idea to bring back a weekly event to keep the global music vibe alive in SF and to help keep chebi playing for as long as he could (and he did keep playing until his very last days).

Due to a fire at Little Baobab in May of last year (which is where Underground Nomads was set to start that month) and the Bissap Baobab crew having to consolidate all their parties and move the restaurant into one venue, it made sense for us to move to our current venue, F8. We are so pleased to have the opportunity to have Marco with us as, representing the African vibe and global soul that he helped bring to San Francisco nightlife, along with Chebi and a few others.

Marco and the Bissap Baobab family’s support of Cheb i Sabbah’s nights is invaluable. Bissap Baobab also hosted ‘Tribal Nights’ and numerous special events with DJ Amar and the tribal belly dance community. Bollyhood Cafe / Bissap Baobab Village became quickly FatChanceBellyDance’s favorite SF venue to do shows at when we kicked off Tribal Nights there.

Proceeds from this night will go to help the fundraising efforts to re-open Little Baobab. Some funds were raised through Indiegogo, and they still have a ways to go. In addition to coming to Underground Nomads this week, you can help them by going to Bissap Baobab Village for a wonderful dinner experience anytime. The food is delicious and the environment they create is warm and friendly.

Excerpts from a 2003 San Francisco Chronicle article/Profile:

… Senghor isn’t just a restaurateur. He’s also a sought-after DJ (his moniker: DJ Marco, of course) and a music producer who brings African singers to the Bay Area. Seeing Senghor in his two restaurants (the other, called Little Baobab, is just around the corner from Bissap Baobab) or spinning songs or overseeing an African show, it’s easy to assume that he inherited his family’s genes for success — but the stories Senghor tells of his short-circuited ventures, his low-status jobs, his health challenges and a collapsing roof are all bridges to a recent past … (Read Full Article)

October 29: Jimmy Love, Zoe Jakes + French Tribal Embassy + Calamity Sam

We have a 5th Tuesday this month with an extra-special guest lineup which includes a dozen dancers from France, featuring solo performances by ZOE JAKES & CALAMITY SAM, both joining in for a late night UNMATA style I.T.S. set (Improvizational Tribal Style Belly Dance) to music mixed live by JIMMY LOVE and DJ AMAR.

NOTE: This night starts early, at 8:00pm. Performance sets at 9:00pm (details below).

Non Stop Bhangra’s DJ Jimmy Love will be rockin a global mix, bringing out tunes you won’t hear at Non Stop Bhangra. Not saying there won’t be any bhangra in the mix, but this is one of those rare sets where Jimmy puts on his Global Gloves and showcases a boundary-defying mix of sounds right in line with the Underground Nomads vibe – Breaking Boundaries of Genre and Culture.

JimmyChatman

San Francisco based DJ and Producer Jimmy Love is co-founder of the legendary Non Stop Bhangra parties at Public Works, as well as member of award winning party crew Surya Dub. Jimmy has been rocking the SF Scene and beyond with his unique blend of Electronic, Reggae, Bhangra and Hip-Hop mixes for years, bridging the gap between Eastern and Western dance floors. His remixes have been featured everywhere from the Ghetto Funk blog, BBC Asian Network to The Rub’s remix wall. Bay Area heavyweight, he has shared the bill with some of the top touring acts and traveled all over North America spreading the love.

Zoe

Drawing on her varied and well-rounded performance background, Zoe Jakes has developed a versatile instruction style all her own. Katarina Burda (an original member of Bal-Anat) was her first teacher and influence, and Zoe was a company member of Katarina’s troop Aywah! along with the talented Mira Betz, also an inspiration and longtime teacher, and Elizabeth Strong, whom she spent years performing in the bay area in their group, Arabesque. She went on to perform with Suhaila Salimpour, spent a few years learning how to get in peoples faces in Extra Action Marching Band, and immersed herself in Vaudeville-americana touring with The Yard Dogs Road Show. A proud member of The Indigo Belly Dance Company, Zoe holds Mardi Love and Rachel Brice amongst her teachers and inspiration. Currently Zoe is touring with her band Beats Antique, a group that has 6 albums and hundreds of live shows under their belt. She designs and makes many of her own costumes and co-produces tracks with Beats Antique, adding set designer, and stylist to her body of work.  Zoe has the desire and opportunity to bring belly dance to the masses, having performed at Coachella, Lollapalooza, and Bonneroo festivals in front of thousands of people that don’t know belly dance from an elephant. It is her passion that belly dance can get a wider recognition and respect, and as a touring workshop instructor her classes reflect this ideal, focusing on strong technique and long term motivation.

Zoe has recently joined the Hot Pot Global team and is bringing UNMATA style ITS into her Beats Antique shows (Upcoming Nov. 16th show at the Fillmore will feature Unmata and Calamity Sam). Here’s a lil taste of Hot Pot style from the recent Beats Antique show in PIttsburgh, PA.
