SPECIAL GUEST TAPAN RAJ of Midival Punditz:

TapanRaj_01

There’s no limit to creativity and no barrier on music, so it comes as no surprise then that one half of one of India’s biggest electronica act – Midival Punditz would find himself itching to explore another side of himself and his work. Tapan Raj has come to be associated with cutting edge sound and left of centre thinking. A force to reckon with, he has been producing and performing both as a DJ and a live artist all over the world since 1997.

After establishing an unshakeable reputation for Midival Punditz, he has now decided to venture out solo as a side project and experiment with new sounds. After 4 studio albums and a multitude of licensed works across 70 compilations, TV series, films and video games worldwide with his band, Tapan’s new musical journey as a solo DJ and composer is fresh and evolutionary.

Starting out as a natural progression in his musical career, this project will also help Tapan express all his inspirations and leanings through his set. In this avatar, he wants to focus on all styles of electronic dance music that he has not explored with Midival Punditz before. This new style revolves around more instrumental electronic music with a deep emphasis on underground dance styles like break-beat, old school techno, acid house, DnB and mashups. But there’s no knowing where the project might lead him.

Never wanting to be pinned down to one style in his DJ sets or be pegged in one slot, Tapan is already creating waves with his eclectic style of performance. Tapan is now working on his ‘Mirror Image’ E.P. due for release in June 2014, so keep your ears peeled for his gigs around your city and watch closely as this Pundit carves out his own niche!

Caro2

Caro is a dancer from Costa Rica who got into dancing since she was 3 years old. As a latin, she was first introduced to rhythms like salsa, merengue, cumbia, soca and reggae. Caro also took gymnastics, yoga, ballet, modern dance, hip-hop and breakdance while growing up. And then, a little turkish belly dance which lead her into Tribal Fusion Belly Dance. Since then, she’s been growing up as a fusion dancer, choreographer, teacher and performer. She feels truly inspired by her teachers: Rachel Brice, Mardi Love, Amy Sigil, Heather Stants, Anasma, Zoe Jakes, Kami Liddle, Jill Parker, Kajira Djoumahna and many more. “It’s always an honor to be in their class learning about dance and how to teach it.” Her true passion is to teach dance and she’s been doing it for the last 10 years. She feels the biggest reward is watching her students grow and enjoy dance in every level. As a performer Caro has participated in several festivals in Costa Rica, Colombia, Argentina, USA and Croatia, like the Opa Fest, Massive Spectacular (Las Vegas), Tribal Fest (California) and Split Tribal Fest. She also has been teaching in CR and Colombia, Argentina, USA and Croatia (at Tribal Fest, Las Vegas Bellydance Intensive, Split Tribal Fest and more); Caro is director of Dumanni’s Dance Company and produces dance intensives in Costa Rica (Costa Rica Summer Intensive 2009-2010) and Colombia (Bogota Mini Intensive #1, #2, #3). MWE1

Based in San Francisco, CA, MWE puts a modern and eclectic twist on Turkish and Balkan folk music. As a five member acoustic wind ensemble, MWE plays traditional and original songs with the rarely paired clarinet and the double-reeded zurna.  Add one more clarinet, a saxophone , and a davul (a shoulder slung marching drum), and you’re about the closest to heavy metal you can get without amplification.  MWE’s shows are loud, wild, and raucous affairs known for drawing entire audiences to their feet in one song or less.

MWE has performed at many of the Bay Area’s world music venues such as Ashkenaz, Amnesia, the Red Poppy, and Yoshi’s Lounge to name a few. In addition to performing locally, MWE has gone on three tours which have taken the band all over the west coast to cities such Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver, BC among others. They’ve also performed at Golden Fest in New York- the largest Balkan music festival in the United States. MWE has also been lucky to collaborate with music luminaries Peter Jaques, Faisal Zedan, Paul Bertin, Samuel Atchley, Tobias Roberson, Eva Salina Primack, Marco Peris, and Matt Darriau. MWE also plays an important role in the belly dance community, providing live music for some of the most well-known American dancers including Rachel Brice, Zoe Jakes, Mira Betz, Elizabeth Strong, Jill Parker & The Foxglove Sweethearts, Laura Albert of Luciterra, and Danielle Elizabeth.

Dear friends and supporters. Our co-founder and one of our inspirations for starting the Underground Nomads Tuesday nights has passed after a 2.5 year fight with cancer. The music and support of all of the people from around the world who stepped up to help him with his medical treatments and filled the dancefloors is what kept him going longer than the doctors ever believed possible. He was still coming out and DJing until just a few weeks ago. Holistic treatment kept him healthier for the time he was here than chemo ever would have. He chose the right thing so he could be present rather than slowly fade away. His message to all who love him is to send him off with meditations wishing him well on his journey into the next realm, instead of being sad.

Chebi-Eloise

His partner during the last few years of his life, Eloise, who was by his side and took care of Cheb i Sabbah from beginning to end, shares this message: Please take a moment to recite mantra for Chebiji’s liberation, for world peace, for true happiness for all sentient beings. “OM MANI PADME HUM” … It was my honor to care for him, to share life and love together. He is forever with me, he is my angel. OM MANI PADME HUM!

Eloise is His angel, and is a permanent member of the Underground Nomads family. Blessings go out to Eloise, to the rest of Chebiji’s family – including his close friends who he considered family just the same – and to his extended family of supporters who stood by his side from near and far.

This week – and weeks forward – we will celebrate his life and Music at Underground Nomads.

DJ Amar will be spinning a set inspired by Cheb i Sabbah’s influence on him. We will also be joined by special guest from the Ambient Mafia- Mo Corleone. She is a perfect addition to this night bringing the global vibe even stronger in Chebiji’s honor.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

A chameleon by nature, Mo Corleone is a DJ that defies categorization. On any given weekend you may find her directing the dance floor in a dark warehouse or slammin’ club venue, but you’re just as likely to catch her in the Sierra Nevada mountains, the Hawaiian jungle, or the Black Rock Desert. Mo loves to exploit the gray area between genres. You’ll appreciate her sets if you like electro in your techno, psy in your progressive, or rock in your breakbeats. When she’s not bouncing with the energetic renegade crew Want It, Mo chills out with the Bay Area darlings of downtempo, the Ambient Mafia.
(Photo by Brad Dosland, Taboo Media – during an Electric Vardo fundraiser for Unmata at Club 6).
Underground Nomads and Electric Vardo Co-founder and resident DJ Amar met Cheb i Sabbah early in his DJ career, and had the amazing opportunity to stand behind his DJ, subbing for Chebiji, alongside Janaka Selekta, during his legendary Tuesday nights at Nickie’s in the lower Haight. from 2005 onward, when Cheb i Sabbah was on tour, Amar or Janaka would play for the dancefloor on those Tuesday nights. In the years following, Amar had joined Janaka and Chebiji in many SF productions including Worldly, and performed alongside Chebiji at events and festivals where that unique blend of global vibe was called for. Amar is known for his unique mix that has been largely inspired by Cheb i Sabbah’s music and dancefloor sets, as well as by the many amazing music producers and DJs that he has been introduced to by him.

Brought together by their love of the dance Miss Kelly, Marci Ann, and Medina Maitreya banded together instantly, each contributing their unique dance backgrounds to this project. From the graceful slink of Urban Tribal, the fiery edge of Atash Maya, and the beauty of The Bhoomi Project.
Together they are Sirenas Morenas.

Of course, it’s 4th Tuesday – so we have our beloved resident DJ Dulce Vita rockin the decks for your dancefloor pleasure.
