This Tuesday we have a Special Guest joining us on a visit from Hawaii. No stranger to the global dub scene, DJ and Producer Adrian Blackhurst, became known in the World Music Electronica scene as a member of Vancouver, BC’s Beats Without Borders crew. With Maui as his current home-base/launching-pad, Adrian travels the world sharing his music, and is always a welcome guest when he rolls through town.
Paired with DJ Sep, this night is sure to be an ethnically fuelled dubbified night on the dancefloor. Underground Nomads resident DJ Sep plays on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. You can also check her out on Sundays at Dub Mission, along with her crew, for SF’s longest running Reggae dance party. At Underground Nomads, she pulls out unique sets spanning a world of sounds with her signature dub vibes, bringing in elements from her years as a Bay Area world music DJ and host of KPFA’s Off The Beaten Path.
Each week, we have a brilliant mix of dance performances by some amazing local and visiting dancers. This week, we bring residents Amberetta and Millie Maddox.
Amberetta is a second generation bellydancer who began performing at the age of five, studying ballet, jazz, and tap, as well as the piano. In 2004, she began studying Tribal Fusion dance with Andrea Perkins and performed with the Dandasha Dance Company in Chattanooga, Tennessee. In addition, Amberetta obtained her 230 hour Yoga Teacher Certification from Yoga Alliance through the Asheville Yoga Center in June 2010. In September of 2010, she relocated to the San Francisco area to pursue performance opportunities and further her dance education. In addition to her solo work, she performs Tribal Fusion Bellydance with RockaBelly under the direction of Kamille Hitz.
She presents the dance form she loves with a special mix of strength, independence, femininity, and dangerous curves. Tonight she will balance two very sharp, thirty-six inch scimitars as she performs her own original choreography.
Millie Maddox is a professional 2D artist and animator with a background in the mobile video games industry. She discovered belly dance 7 years ago and took her very first class here in SF with The Mama of Tribal Fusion Belly Dance Jill Parker. While working in NYC she continued her dance studies with Sera Solstice, Danielle Hutton and the East Coast Tribal stylization of movement. Cammi Darshan Vance was also one of her core teachers and heavily influenced the style of movement and emotion that she brings into her dance. Millie is a member of Cammi Darshan Vance’s troupe Petrichor with whom she has performed semi-professionally at Venus Uprising 2010, Tribal Fest 2012, and Danse du Ventre at the Alberta Rose theatre in Portland Oregon 2013. She also performed with Jill Parker’s Student troupe at Kafana Balkan this Summer. Millie has recently transplanted back to the Bay Area from from New York City and is currently immersing herself in the rich belly dance culture of San Francisco while in the process of developing with her own unique voice in dance. Millie also bakes killer gluten free brownies which you can find occasionally at Stephanie Field’s Sugarfoot Grits food pop up around San Francisco. Photo is courtesy of Jasmine Van T Productions.
