Sept. 3: Father and Son Cheb i Sabbah and Opium

Kicking off September, we have a special Father + Son night with Cheb i Sabbah and his son, Elijah – aka Opium, who you have seen at the door at the legendary Tuesdays at Nickies … Now fast forward to 2013, and welcome the next generation of Sabbah – Global infused Hip Hop.

As always, the night will feature  dance performances at 10pm (Note we will begin performances at 9:30 starting next week), this week featuring Jennifer Faust, Millie Maddox and Laura Albert.

Jennifer Faust is a Bay Area local fusion bellydancer with a background in professional ballet – dancing with Dance Theatre Seven, Marin Ballet and in the UC Santa Barbara Dance Company.  Like most dancers, Faustsought new venues for dynamism and movement. During a performance of Jill Parker’s ‘Ultra Gypsy’ in San Francisco, she fell in love with bellydance. Captivated by the complexity that tribal bellydance fusion granted in the translation of music to physical form, Faust began training in 2003. She joined the Suhaila Dance Company from 2005-06 and then took a five year hiatus to compete in Muay Thai taking her to Thailand.  Currently Faust is a member of the following dance troupes: Ariellah’s Deshret Dance Company, Ego Umbra, Adara (directed by Natalie Nayun) and the Dirty Foot Dames collaboration.

Faust is a Registered Nurse and began her independent film making adventure in 2012 collaborating with Freyja and DJ Amar:

Millie Maddox is a professional 2D artist and animator with a background in the mobile video games industry. She discovered belly dance 7 years ago and took her very first class here in SF with The Mama of Tribal Fusion Belly Dance Jill Parker. While working in NYC she continued her dance studies with Sera Solstice, Danielle Hutton and the East Coast Tribal stylization of movement. Cammi Darshan Vance was also one of her core teachers and heavily influenced the style of movement and emotion that she brings into her dance. Millie is a member of Cammi Darshan Vance’s troupe Petrichor with whom she has performed semi-professionally at Venus Uprising 2010, Tribal Fest 2012, and Danse du Ventre at the Alberta Rose theatre in Portland Oregon 2013. She also performed with Jill Parker’s Student troupe at Kafana Balkan this Summer. Millie has recently transplanted back to the Bay Area from from New York City and is currently immersing herself in the rich belly dance culture of San Francisco while in the process of developing with her own unique voice in dance.
Millie also bakes killer gluten free brownies which you can find occasionally at Stephanie Field’s Sugarfoot Grits food pop up around San Francisco.

Laura Albert of Vancouver Canada is a founding member and co-director of Luciterra Dance Company.  A lover of magic, the hyper-real, mystery, elegance, vintage dust, metaphors, otherworldliness, and praxis, she spins her tales through the creation of movement, costumery, and community.  She holds certifications with Suhaila Salimpour (Level one), Colleena Shakti (100 hours of Odissi training), and Carolena Nericcio (General Skills).  She has been performing up and down the West Coast since 2008, and has performed in major festivals from the yukon to california.  Luciterra currently produces a travelling full stage show incorporating fusion bellydance, contemporary dance stylings, contact juggling, circus arts, fat beats, and digital culture, which can be seen at music events, major festivals, and underground parties across the West Coast of Canada and beyond.

Opïum Sabbah will be sampling tracks from his up coming album Freedom ïs Free produced by his father Cheb i Sabbah.
